Life Is Stressful. But Does It Have To Be?

We wear stress like a status symbol. We proclaim the words, β€œI’m busy” like it’s something to be awarded a prize.

Women are no exception. We do it all.Β

Busy calendars. Full inboxes. Shopping Lists. To-Do Lists. A car full of kids. Sleepless nights.

A nervous system running on caffeine, doomscrolling, and momentum. Maybe we fit a snack somewhere in-between.Β

Somewhere along the way, feeling overwhelmed became synonymous with being productive β€” even successful. We even branded it #hustleculture and #girlbossing.

And yet, despite living in a time with more wellness tools, information, and optimisation strategies than ever before, many of us feel more depleted, distracted and disconnected than ever. The statistics don’t lie.Β

So what if the conversation around stress is due for a reset?

That’s exactly the conversation we had with Ziggy Razuki β€” Australian yoga teacher, meditation guide, and holistic therapy coach whose work spans movement, psychology, stress management and self-inquiry.

Over the past decade, Ziggy has taught thousands of people across Australia and internationally, helping individuals cultivate greater resilience, clarity and connection through practical, embodied wellbeing tools.Β

One of the most powerful ideas he offers is ironically, quite simple:

There is a difference between a stressful situation and a stress response.

And understanding that difference can change everything.

Stress Isn’t Always The Problem

When we think about stress, we tend to point outward.

The demanding job. The family logistics. The unread messages. The world. The uncertainty.Β

Ziggy offers a more nuanced perspective: often, it’s not the event itself, but our internal response to it that shapes our experience.

β€œA lot of us are operating so far beyond capacity,” he explains. β€œSo any additional challenge feels overwhelming β€” not because challenge is inherently bad, but because the system is already overloaded.”

If we really think about it - the idea that if stress were purely external, then the only solution would be eliminating every challenge from life. And that’s neither realistic nor particularly desirable. Growth has always required a degree of discomfort.

So how can we get comfortable with discomfort? And are there more ways than one to deal with stress, hormones, high cortisol and anxiety?Β

Few people find meditation easy the first time they sit still. Exercise rarely feels effortless at the beginning. Eating well can feel restricting the first time you say no to that second piece of cake.Β

Meaningful change, whether physical, emotional or spiritual, asks something more of us. It asks us to show up, consistently, to be compassionate with ourselves and open to change.Β

It is a different kind of discipline, and perhaps instead, one of devotion.Β

Does Stress Look Good on You?

WelleCo’s philosophy is grounded in the idea that beauty is not simply aesthetic β€” it’s energetic. As our founder Elle says, β€œit’s soul deep, not skin deep.”

It’s how you feel, how you move through your day, how available you are for your life.

And Ziggy echoes this simply and beautifully.

β€œBeing well,” he says, β€œis not finding the day-to-day too difficult.”

It’s not overthinking a walk with friends.

It’s not dreading the day before it begins.

It’s not feeling like life is happening to you.

It’s not feeling out of control.Β

It’s not feeling unwell.Β

Where so much of wellness culture remains focused on appearances, optimisation metrics and the illusion of perfection, Ziggy reminds us thatΒ  some of the most β€œwell-looking” people can be deeply dysregulated internally. And at the same time, some of the calmest, strongest, most resilient people may not fit conventional wellness aesthetics at all.

And so the question becomes less: How do I look?

And more: How does my life feel?

Our Industry’s β€˜Depth’ ProblemΒ

Ziggy spoke about how modern wellness has become increasingly surface-level β€” reduced to bite-sized content, aesthetic routines, and quick-fix promises.

β€œWe’re losing our capacity to engage with depth,” he shared.

Of course, a 15-second clip can inspire. A podcast quote can open a door. But meaningful transformation rarely happens at the pace of the algorithm. Real wellbeing asks for discernment.Β

It asks for slow. It asks for awareness. It asks for honesty. It asks for devotion. It asks for consistency. And it asks for compassion.Β

The Discipline ReframeΒ

After almost a decade of the term being thrown around all corners of the internet, it’s becoming apparent that people are (literally) tiring of discipline.

To many people, particularly women, this can feel like pressure. This can feel unrealistic. This can feel like masculine traits. This can feel misaligned and inauthentic.Β

Ziggy prefers something softer: Devotion.

He asks, can you be devoted to your wellbeing? Devoted to your energy? Devoted to your sleep? Devoted to your nutrition?Β

Can you be devoted to your mind, your heart and soul, as much as your body?Β

What happens when you are devoted to your future self?

When we think about this reframe, we begin to see that devotion is not about dramatic change. It’s about small, self-loving acts of consistency.

A walk after lunch.

Ten quiet minutes before the day begins.

A nourishing ritual each morning. Writing. Drawing. Whatever it may be. It’s personal.Β

A small reflection, or reading before sleep.Β

A single action may feel insignificant in isolation. But repeated over weeks, months and years, these choices shape the direction of our lives.

As Ziggy puts it, moving the nose of a plane by just a few degrees may seem imperceptible at takeoff β€” but over distance, it changes the destination entirely.

From Existing To Thriving

One of the frameworks Ziggy uses with clients is beautifully simple. He asks: Are you surviving, existing, living or thriving?

Surviving is depletion. Existing is functioning, but disconnected. Living is feeling reasonably well, with energy and engagement. But thriving is feeling aligned, resilient, inspired and deeply connected to life.

Most of us move between these states. And that’s human. But some of us never reach the latter.

Awareness is what matters most. Because once you know where you are, you can choose to shift. Often, the first step isn’t radical transformation. It’s simply understanding yourself better.
